The most common question my clients ask me is: “How much time to I need to spend every day training my puppy/dog?” And I have always answered: “just 15 minutes!” Seriously, this is the truth. In 15 minutes a day you can reinforce the work you are doing with your trainer and see fantastic results.

It wasn’t until recently that I finally realized that I have truly incorporated FlyLady into my training style if I can give that answer…just 15 minutes…which is what FlyLady tells us all the time.

There are many reasons why the 15 minute approach works wonderfully with dogs. One is that dogs, especially puppies, get bored with doing one thing after about 15 minutes. Another is that I think it is much easier to say to yourself, “I’m going to work with Fido for 15 minutes” instead of telling yourself, “If I don’t get an hour of training in today, Fido will fail in class tomorrow.” Don’t put that kind of pressure on yourself or your dog.

I also think it’s a great idea to break that 15 minutes into three, 5 minutes sessions. In just 5 minutes of training, you can refocus your puppy and distract them from some other problem behavior. The point is to have fun working with your dog!
